ABOUT THE SERIES

Classical music has something of a sexism problem - from casting, to clueless staging, to even smoothing over the more problematic parts of operas because “that’s just how things were.” It’s also got a class problem: art music is and should be for everyone, but the social gatekeeping and cost associated with attending means it’s really not meant to be enjoyed by everyone.

In the immortal words of the great bard, “Fuck that.”

Half cabaret, half drag show and 100% not cis white guys, Cabaret dell’Arte is a performance series whose purpose art music to the cabaret environment, queer up the storylines and and genderfuck the casting. Are you a soubrette who’s always wanted to sing Va! Tosca? Here’s your chance. Are you a trans woman who wants a go at Mimi? This is your moment to shine. Want to put on your best boy drag and sing the fuck out of Sempre libera? We’re here for it.

DEADLINE TO APPLY FOR THIS SHOW: MARCH 31, 2019

CURRENT SHOW THEME

Cabaret dell’Arte: An Immorality Play will be presenting a thrilling tour of the creeps, leches, ‘seducteurs’ the downright fuckheads of opera...and the characters who love-hate them. Niche programming, right?

You’re welcome to sing in the original language, but if there is an English translation that doesn’t suck terribly and you’re good with, English is preferred. Hey, if translating opera into the local lingo was good enough for Europe for three hundred years, it’s good enough for us...and supertitles don’t really work in a cabaret environment.

CASTING

At this time, casting is open to AFAB (people assigned female at birth) singers of any gender - cis, trans, queer, nonbinary, straight - as well as trans women and femme-identified AMAB individuals. We are also interested in AFAB/femme-identified pianists and performers of other genres (dancers, circus arts, burlesque, etc.) Casting will generally be first-come, first-serve, based on the needs of the show.
